Important Features

It’s time to look at a few important features that will help you to make an informed buying decision.

Furniture Quality Stand

One of the fringe benefits of an acoustic piano is that in addition to sounding great, it also looks nice. While Keyboards may also sound great (when you get a good one) they aren’t quite as décor oriented.

Not by default anyway. However, there are plenty of electric pianos out there that focus on providing a furniture quality look. This is one of them.

Furniture quality stands are not necessarily uncommon. However, the fact of the matter is that you usually don’t find them with products in this price range.

Simply put, if you want a good look at a really good price, this is a piano to consider.

Fully Weighted Keys

Weighted keys are another feature that you get by default when you buy an acoustic. With electric pianos, however, this is not the case.

While good pianos are generally going to include this feature it is never a given. The benefit of weighted keys is pretty straightforward.

Right now you are currently playing and practicing on an electric piano. However, that probably won’t always be the case. For lessons, or for concert scenarios, you will probably play an acoustic.

When those situations arise you should be prepared for the transition. Moving from unweighted keys to weighted keys can be challenging. You will be much better off starting on a keyboard that designed to feel like an acoustic.

As an added bonus, this keyboard also utilizes soft touch technology. This means that the keys will respond proportionately to the amount of force you apply. In other words, when you play softly, the speakers will produce soft tones. When you play loudly, they will produce loud tones.

A very basic feature, but also one that many keyboards don’t have.

Price isn’t exactly a feature, but it is important. Though it would not be fair to say that this piano is cheap, it is certainly affordable.

A furniture stand with weighted, graded, soft touch keys, can often be very expensive. For your money, you get quite a bit with this unit.

Another nice feature of this piano is that it is designed to help beginners out. It features what the manufacturer refers to as the Yamaha Education Suite (or YES).

YES is an onboard program that provides users with basic playing lessons.

Obviously, YES cannot replace the knowledge of an instructor. However, it can make for an excellent supplemental resource.

YES can help learn you with anything from tempo, to playing accuracy. Small features like this help the piano appeal to musicians of every skill level.

In the world of electric keyboards, voices do not refer to sounds that people make. Voices instead refer to different tones that the instrument can assume.

The Yamaha YPG 535 is capable of 361 different voices. This includes both different instruments, and other sound effects.

Last, but not least, this keyboard also makes it very easy to connect with your computer. It features a USB port for recording and uploading your music.

Simple, straightforward song recording is one of the big benefits of using an electric keyboard. However, some pianos are much better at recording music than others.

The USB ports that you get here will make recording your music simple and straightforward.

Considering the price, the issues with this keyboard are not huge. One thing that we did notice was that the sound quality was not incredible.

This isn’t to say that it is bad. However, if you come from the world of acoustic piano, you are definitely going to be aware of a big difference.

Played at a regular volume, it is pretty much fine. However, the louder you play, the clearer it becomes that the sound is flawed.

This is a pretty standard component of keyboards in this price range. Still, it is never ideal to see.

We also found that the coverings on the keys do not feel realistic. This is also pretty typical of the price range.

Lastly, buyers will also want to keep in mind that the pedals are not built into the stand. For higher end furniture stands, the pedal setup will usually resemble that of an upright piano.

That isn’t the case here.

These things aside, it is a good piano at a great price.

Pros And Cons

Now that we have gone over all of the key features, it is nearly time to make your decision.

Before you decide though, it may be helpful to go over the key strengths and weaknesses of the instrument. That in mind, let’s take a look at some pros and cons.

Decisions, decisions. It’s time to start thinking about whether or not you want to buy the Yamaha YPG-535. While there is plenty to like about this instrument, it also isn’t without its cons.

Do the pros outweigh the issues? Ultimately only you will be able to decide that. However, there are some important points to go over, that could help you decide.

If you are looking for an affordable, furniture quality piano, then it would be hard to find a better option.

Still, if you want the best sound quality that you can get, you may need to keep looking.

Ultimately, only you can decide if this is the right instrument for your needs. We just hope that we made the decision a little bit easier.
